The article explores the beginning of presence of Michelangelo’s poetry in Polish literature. It identifies Cyprian Norwid as the figure who introduced Lucjan Siemieński, the first Polish translator of Buonarroti’s works, to these poems. The text recounts Siemieński’s meeting with Norwid, described in the introduction to his translations, which initiated their shared reading of Buonarroti’s poetry. Their conversations ultimately led to the publication of the first Polish translations of these works. Although Norwid inspired Siemieński and other poets to engage with Michelangelo’s poetry, he himself paraphrased only one piece, “Reply of the Night,” imbuing it with an ironic tone.
