When does an anecdote become the Anecdote? (In the Margins of Cyprian Norwid’s Writings)

Abstract

The article begins by explaining the relatively late and infrequent occurrence of the term “anecdote” in the Polish language. In Polish, it has numerous and age-old synonyms, characteristic of spoken culture, in which tales, stories, anecdotes, jokes, witticisms, quips etc. have always held a prominent place. The main part of the discussion is devoted to an analysis of the place of anecdote in Norwid’s literary works, while the central point, relating directly to the titular play on the terms “anecdote” and “Anecdote”, is the poet’s treatise Milczenie [Silence]. In this text, Norwid uses a method of “approximations” to illustrate the historical processes by which “anecdote” transforms into “Anecdote”. This process is embedded in history and literature, as illustrated by a sequence of key (pivotal) acts which are simultaneously carriers of literary meanings (genotypes): Legend – Epic – History – Anecdote... Revolution. The conclusion draws on the poet’s personal history, namely the “transformation” of the story of his arrest by the Prussian police (June 1846) into Anecdote, illustrating the individual’s responsibility to the state.
