“Fields, greenery, trenches”. A commentary on the first line of Moja ojczyzna

Abstract

The article analyses the meaning of the word “trenches” from the poem Moja ojczyzna [My Homeland], establishing its former meaning of ‘an earthen enclosure around a rural settlement’ and ‘a hillock, elevation’. This reconstructed meaning allows us to recognize the polemical nature of the work in relation to the vision of the homeland found in Invocation from Pan Tadeusz by A. Mickiewicz.

Keywords:

Moja ojczyzna [My Homeland], trenches, Mickiewicz, ditch, hillock
