Norwid’s aryballos

Abstract

This article presents a recently discovered aryballos that once belonged to Cyprian Norwid. Its origin is known owing to a dedication affixed to the bottom of the vessel’s base. The author discusses the circumstances under which the aryballos was given to Norwid by his friend, the sculptor Marceli Guyski, outlining – on the basis of preserved documents, mainly Norwid’s correspondence – the broader background of the acquaintance of the two Polish artists. The second part of the article is devoted to the find. In addition to basic information about the aryballos and its characteristics, a comparative analysis was carried out, which led to the assumption that the vessel originated in an Attic or Laconian workshop in the Archaic period.
