“The Age of Anecdote”. The place of the anecdote in Norwid’s philosophy of history

Abstract

In Norwid’s treatise Milczenie [Silence] and in his Album “Orbis” I, the same historiosophical formula appears: “Legend – Epic – History – Anecdote – Revolution”. Both were probably written at the same time, towards the end of the poet’s life (in the 1880s). The formula owes its form primarily to the philosophy of Giambattista Vico, but perhaps also to Fustel de Coulanges’s La Cité antique, which Norwid read in 1882 (it features “Legend” and “Revolution”).

For Norwid, the Age of Anecdote, together with Revolution, brings one turn of the spiral of time to a close. This phase is complementary to the Era of History; it articulates its “omissions”: it complements the “triumphal” view of history with the perspective of a subjective biography. It is a time of engaging with history in an intimate and familiar manner, from the level of the private sphere. At the same time – in aesthetic terms – it is a period of the dismantling of the sublime, a transition from pathos to the ridiculous. The quintessence of the Anecdote phase – in the literary sphere – is the romance and the novel. They are characterised by speaking of the past in colloquial, intimate, jovial, often comical language, focused on detail. Norwid’s attitude towards the Age of Anecdote (and the anecdote as a literary genre) is clearly ambivalent.
