Mój psalm. Interest and duty

Abstract

Written in 1882, the poem Mój psalm [My Psalm] is an occasional, album work, presented by Norwid to Seweryna Duchińska (1816-1905), a writer and editor, organiser of the cultural life of the Parisian exile. The article recalls basic facts from her biography, documents the writer’s relationship with Norwid and proposes an interpretation of the poem as a poetic play exploiting the ambiguity of the concept of “interest”. The final section considers the distinction between “moral interest” and “material interest” introduced by Chateaubriand.
