Censorial trials and tribulations of the dissertation O komediach Norwida by Irena Sławińska

Abstract

On the basis of widely unknown archival sources, this article reconstructs the editorial and censorial history of Irena Sławińska’s would-be habilitation dissertation O komediach Norwida [On Norwid’s Comedies]. It has been established that the researcher completed the dissertation at the end of 1951, and throughout 1952 and the beginning of the following year she made efforts to publish it, in parallel with her efforts to obtain a habilitation degree. The dissertation was withheld at the Lublin branch of the censorship office, only to be finally allowed to be printed after the intervention of Professor Andrzej Wojtkowski – a member of the Parliament of the Polish People’s Republic and at the same time an employee of the Catholic University of Lublin. The reason for the stalling of the book’s publication, as the article states, may have been the authorities’ dislike of the author, the unfavourable timing of the book’s submission for publication, the Catholic publishing house, but also the subject addressed in the book. O komediach Norwida is the only publication by Sławińska published in 1953, which may indicate the existence of a censorship “mark” attached to her name during the Stalinist years.
