Nicholas Rescher’s View on Perfected Science

Abstract

The paper analyses certain limitations of science that prevent arriving at the perfected science. According to Nicholas Rescher the perfected science implies accomplishing four theoretical conditions: erotetic completeness, pragmatic completeness, predictive completeness and temporal finality (the Ω-condition). These conditions are connected to specific goals of scientific inquiry. Yet, in Rescher’s view both theoretical and practical obstacles (e.g. question dynamics, instability of science, cognitive complexity, sophisticated technology, finite /also financial/ resources) which prevent us from completing science. Thus, the perfected science is nothing more than an idealization which is useful to reveal a limited character of our scientific effort.
