Once upon a Time in… Cinema. Quentin Tarantino and the Symbolic Liberation of Reality

Abstract

The article proposes an interpretation of selected themes in Quentin Tarantino’s work through the prism of tools and concepts proposed by 20th-century media theories. The main issues addressed in the text include the use of violence in film images and the very way in which cinema is presented as a tool for symbolically liberating reality in the American director’s work. In his analyses, the author draws on, among others, the philosophy of Vilém Flusser, Siegfried Kracauer’s film theory, and selected concepts of psychoanalysis. The article is divided into five parts: introductory remarks, in which the issues discussed and the theoretical framework of the text are presented; part two is an attempt to reconstruct Tarantino’s views on film as a medium; in the third part, the author looks at the place of film violence and its emancipatory dimension in Tarantino’s reflections on his own films, as well as in relation to his work (examples from Kill Bill and Django); part four addresses the issue of cinematic representations of cinema as fulfilling an emancipatory function in Tarantino’s work. (examples from the films Inglourious Basterds and Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood); in the last part, the author provides a brief summary, returning once again to the title category of symbolic liberation.
