Edward Sulicki’s Dialectic Argument for the Immortality of the Human Soul

Abstract

These article presents an argument for the immortality of the human soul given in a work ignored by contemporary historians of philosophy entitled Outline of the Philosophy of Eternal Present and Identity, written by a translator and publicist, but also an amateur philosopher Edward Sulicki. This author is not well-known not only in studies on the history of philosophy in Poland, but also in encyclopedias and philosophical dictionaries. The presentation of this argument is preceded by a short introduction to the philosophical context in which the forgotten author worked. The analysis of this argument shows the direct dependence of Sulicki’s philosophical concepts not only on the pantheistic philosophies of Spinoza and Hegel, but also on the concept of the soul presented by Pomponazzi. One of the hypotheses put forward in this article is also an attempt to link Sulicki’s amateur philosophy with Polish Messianic philosophy, especially with its version proposed by Adam Mickiewicz, and the natural philosophy of Henry Levittoux.
