The Problem of the Flow of Time, Determinism and Reductionism in Sabine Hossenfelder’s Philosophy of Physics. Critical Analysis

Abstract

This article is a polemic against some of the theses formulated in Sabine Hossenfelder’s work Existential Physics. A Scientist’s Guide to Life’s Biggest Questions. It is argued that 1) the claim of the real existence of the past, present, and future is only one of the possible philosophical interpretations of the space-time of special relativity and that the thesis of the objective time flow is reconcilable with modern physics; 2) determinism is significantly limited by the probabilistic nature of one of the fundamental theories of modern physics that are quantum mechanics, and the thesis that 3) “reductionism is a fact” is not supported by chaos theory, in which the behaviour of physical systems is described by nonlinear differential equations.
