The Face of the Other in a Distorting Mirror: Lévinas on Knowing Another Person

Abstract

In this article, I will take a closer look at Emmanuel Lévinas’s vision of knowing other minds. This concept usually comes as a surprise to the unprepared reader. Lévinas argues that a cognitive encounter with another human being is, in its essence, an encounter with unfathomable infinity, and as such resembles nothing less than contact with a divine being. This concept is usually naturally linked to the religious background of his philosophy, but I will demonstrate that the thought process that led to it can be reconstructed independently of any issues of religious faith or theology. To understand its internal logic, it suffices to consider the philosophical context of the author’s reflections.
