Rose Rand on the Philosophical Thought of Tadeusz Kotarbiński

Abstract

Rose Rand received her doctoral degree in 1938 on the basis of a dissertation entitled Kotarbinskis Philosophie. Before the defense, she had published an article in Erkenntnis that was one of the first attempts to summarize Tadeusz Kotarbiński’s philosophy in the international philosophical debate. Born in Lwów and associated with the Vienna Circle, Rand also served as a translator and promoter of the Polish school of logic, contributing to the dissemination of the philosophical ideas of the Lvov-Warsaw School, both among neopositivists and, more broadly, internationally. The aim of this article is to reconstruct the way in which Rand interpreted Kotarbiński’s philosophy on the basis of her article in Erkenntnis, and to analyze the extent to which her account corresponded to the assumptions of logical empiricism. The article also looks at how this work was received in the literature. The presented study fills an existing research gap by showing both the influence of the Lvov-Warsaw School and Rand’s role as an intellectual mediator between Vienna and Lwów.
