The Main Problems of Leadership Ethics. Introduction to the Debate

Abstract

The text is a presentation of the main issues contained in the book The Ethics of Leadership. It presents the elements of the monograph in a necessarily abbreviated way: starting from an attempt to define leadership as a person who motivates change and implements that change, not only in the organisation in which he or she works. A key issue for leadership ethics is stated as such: what ethical standards should apply to those whose essence of action is to change norms? This is followed by a brief summary of the content of the monograph - the historical part and the contemporary part. In the contemporary part, the models of transactional, transformational, servant, authentic and charismatic leadership are discussed. The summary of the third part discusses issues related to the trait/virtue of integrity in the actions of a leader; also the problems of paternalism in leadership ethics and outlines the discussion of whether the ethics of leaders is an ethics of special people or an ethics that does not require special norms for leaders are presented. The text concludes with the fourth part, where normative proposals are presented, based on a deontological scheme of prohibited, neutral, commanded and supererogatory acts in leadership ethics.
