Stalnaker’s Theory of Conditionals

Abstract

The subject of the article is a formal analysis of Robert Stalnaker’s C2 system of conditional logic. In the introductory, first part of the work, it was shown in general that the treatment of a conditional sentence from a natural language, using such logical connectives as material implication or Lewis’ strict implication, is not fully adequate. The second part was entirely devoted to the complex analysis of the C2 system. The reader will find there proofs of the main theses, properties and facts about C2, as well as a formal presentation of the semantics for the quantifier-free version of this system. The third part discusses the basic arguments against Stalnaker’s semantics and his famous thesis: Conditional Excluded Middle.
