On the Meaning and Role of Contemplation and Meditation in Philosophy

Abstract

The purpose of this article is to consider the meaning and role of contemplation and meditation in philosophy. Philosophy is understood here in a classical way — as the love of wisdom, as a kind of theoretical thinking that deals with the most general questions concerning the world. Contemplation and meditation play an important role in fulfilling this task. Contemplation is the confrontation with a being or object and the intellectual absorption of it by the knowing subject. It is the unprejudiced looking at something or looking at something that is somehow transcendent to the contemplative subject. Meditation is reflecting on the consciousness life of the subject. In philosophical cognition, they complement each other. Contemplation guarantees the objectivity of cognition, and meditation – vigilance over the correctness of cognitive acts.
