The Credit Activities of the Bank of Poland (1924-1939). Outline of Issues

Abstract

The article presents an analysis of the credit activity of the Bank of Poland between the years 1924 and 1939. In accordance with the provisions set forth in the Articles of Association, the Bank of Poland engaged in a range of lending activities, including the discounting of bills of exchange, warrants, drawn securities, and coupons. Additionally, the Bank provided loans secured by assets such as gold, silver, and fixed-interest securities. Consequently, the lending activity of the Bank of Poland and the majority of issuing banks during this period was based on three fundamental instruments: credit rationing, the selection of bills of exchange, and the discount (interest) rate. The lending activity of the Bank of Poland between 1924 and 1939 was largely contingent upon the prevailing economic conditions in Poland and the wider global context.
