Illustration – the Cultural Environment of Meeting between Literature and Painting. Comments on Illustrations by Jan Lebenstein

Abstract

This article, dedicated to illustrations created by Jan Lebenstein, points out the cultural condition of illustration itself and the works of the painter in particular. It shows analyzed problems in the perspective of culture of meeting. On the example of drawings to biblical story of The Babel Tower it indicates the artistic strategies of the painter which enable him to surpass certain cultural messages by the mean of a picture. Finally, in the synthetic way the article presents typology of Jan Lebenstein’s illustrations.
