Methods of Portraying the Protagonist in a Historical Documentary Film

Abstract

This article analyzes the ways in which a film protagonist is portrayed within the context of the evolution and functions of the historical documentary film, emphasizing its role as an authorial interpretation of the past, rather than merely an objective record of facts. The research material consists of selected Polish historical documentaries that represent diverse approaches to portraying protagonists. The article discusses the methodology of portraying protagonists, highlighting the crucial importance of the witness’s face as a source of emotion and authenticity. Various strategies for depicting characters are highlighted, including the use of archival materials, reenactments featuring actors, and animation. Specific types of portraits are described, such as images of experts woven into the narrative or amateur recordings that paint a picture of an entire generation. The study as a whole demonstrates how contemporary filmmakers combine education with modern means of expression, such as crowdsourcing and hybrid forms. The historical documentary serves as a tool for shaping collective memory and social identity, including through the way it portrays its subjects.
