An Outline of the Concept of Happiness in Chinese Culture: A Historical and Structural Analysis

Abstract

The article outlines the history of the conceptualization of happiness in Chinese culture, present in both philosophical discourse and folk traditions. It focuses especially on the Confucian perspective. It includes an analysis of concepts such as: moral joy (le), shared joy (tongle), a sense of safety and inner calm (an), and well-being (xingfu). It also includes an analysis of selected structural elements common to the discussed approaches; namely, the relational concept of the self, dynamic and circular cosmology, and the idea of fate (ming). Additionally, it contains a brief comparison of Eastern and Western concepts of happiness.
