Problematic Use of Smartphones, Self-Esteem, and Emotion Regulation in Early Adulthood. Empirical Research

Abstract

The aim of the presented study was to analyze the relationship between problematic mobile phone use (PMPU), self-esteem and emotion regulation in early adulthood. A sample of 216 participants aged 18 to 35 years were examined. Three research tools were used: the MPPUS-9 questionnaire to assess problematic mobile phone use, the SES questionnaire to evaluate self-esteem, and the Polish adaptation of the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ). Data analysis revealed a negative correlation between PMPU and self-esteem, a positive correlation between PMPU and the use of expressive suppression strategies, and no significant correlation between PMPU and cognitive reappraisal strategies. It was found that expressive suppression plays a significant mediating role in the relationship between PMPU and self-esteem in early adulthood. This study contributes to a better understanding of the impact of PMPU on self-esteem and emotion regulation in early adulthood.
