The Importance and Role of Culture in the Teaching of John Paul II in the Context of Selected Contemporary Approaches To It

Abstract

This study recalls some contemporary approaches and the essence of culture – its understanding in order to read correctly the thought contained in John Paul II’s teaching regarding its understanding, meaning and role. For this purpose, some opinions about it and historical references are presented. Attempts were made to present the thought of John Paul II in relation to these references, and especially to the teaching of the Second Vatican Council and the magisterium of the Church. In this context, considerations were made on the evangelizing and educational mission conducted by the Church. This education in its origins is related to the culture of Ancient Greece and the Judeo-Christian tradition. Attention was paid to the educational power of the Greek paideia and then the specificity of John Paul II’s thought relating to the role and tasks of culture was presented.
