Some Comments on the Concept of Religious Unbelief

Abstract

The aim of this article is to show the complex and, in previous discussions, rarely analysed nature of religious unbelief. The article deals with the concepts of religious faith and religious unbelief as seen by Stanislaw Judycki and St Thomas Aquinas. It is shown that there is considerable convergence between their views, despite the different starting points of their philosophies. The four components of religious faith distinguished by Judycki (belief in the existence of God, the moral attitude consisting in the desire for goodness, trust in God and awareness of the presence of God) are discussed. The complex nature of religious unbelief, which can be determined by the absence of at least one of the components of faith, is then shown.
