The Word and Love in the Philosophy of Ferdinand Ebner and Rev. Józef Tischner

Abstract

The studies – and not only Polish ones – which have been conducted in the field of the philosophy of man that we encounter in the works of Ferdinand Ebner and Rev. Józef Tischner – two outstanding representatives of the 20th-century dialogic thinking – in fact only occasionally and merely signal the anthropological and metaphysical significance of the relationship between the word and love. However, in my opinion, this relationship is extremely important in the originary understanding of human existence, which these two philosophers present as the occurrence of the truth about man’s existence. Therefore, in the present study I focus my attention precisely on describing this relationship, and the way it functions in the dialogic thinking of these two philosophers. From a philosophical point of view, it is noteworthy above all because it shows how vibrant philosophy of man is in its metaphysical dimension. In other words, the link between the word and love shows the mode of existence of the dialogically-grounded metaphysics of man in its occurrence-related character. The word and love live in man as objective and at the same time subjective expressions of his spiritual life. In the present article, as I pay attention to these issues, I will not only point to the similarities in the anthropology of these two philosophers, but I will show, above all, that the relationship between the word and love that they expose is an important key to renewing originary thinking about man in the day and age when certainty about what is most fundamental in his life is being shaken.
