Protection of Children in the Catholic Church – Admission of Clerics and Consecrated Persons to Activities Involving Minors in the Light of the Lex Kamilek Provisions

Abstract

The adoption of the Lex Kamilek Act constituted a significant step towards the establishment of a comprehensive system of protection of minors against harm. The legislative amendment also extended its scope to the Catholic Church, introducing the requirement of verifying clerics and consecrated persons in the relevant registers and obtaining the appropriate documentation prior to permitting them to work with children. The purpose of this article is to analyse the relevant provisions and the measures thus far undertaken by the Catholic Church in the field of child protection. Finally, an attempt is made to assess the provisions in terms of their effectiveness.
