Affective disorders are characterised by disturbances in three areas of the psyche: mood, the intellectual sphere, and behaviour and conduct. In addition to symptoms strictly related to mood and psychomotor drive, affective disorders are characterised by the occurrence of delusions, which often occur during the acute phase and are consistent with mood in such cases. Defining these disorders, particularly their signs and symptoms, will help us to understand why affective disorders cause a serious lack of discernment regarding important marital rights and obligations.
