Religion as a Particular Relationship of Man to the World in the Life And Philosophy of Leo Tolstoy

Agnieszka Dziuba

Abstract

Philosophy of religion that Leo Tolstoy formulated in the second period of his life is often either neglected or misunderstood. That is very unfortunate, because it contains matters of fundamental significance for understanding both his life and late works. The present paper is an attempt to delineate the central topics of Tolstoy’s philosophy of religion. It begins with a more general problem of the conception of religion, which is defined by Tolstoy as a certain version of the most general practical attitude to the world. Next the text proceeds to Tolstoy’s conception of God, his positive conception of the authentic Christianity, the critique of Church Christianity, and finally the existential dimension of Tolstoy’s reflection on religion.
