Organ Festivals in Poland – Organisation and Management

Abstract

Organ festivals in Poland are a cultural phenomenon, as they are very numerous and take place in both urban and rural centres, most often in Catholic and Protestant churches during the summer (holiday) season, when cultural institutions are not in operation. To date, however, no comprehensive study of organ/organ music festivals has been undertaken. The aim of this article is to present the results of research into their organisation and management. The research used the method of a diagnostic survey addressed to organisers of organ festivals in Poland. Additionally, secondary materials (mainly available on the Internet) were included in the research. The organisation of organ festivals can contribute not only to the discovery and renovation of forgotten or neglected historical organs or the construction of new, concert instruments, but also to an increase in the audience’s sensitivity to beauty and their interest in cultural heritage (instrument, object, music). It is also an expression of the cultural function of the parish and a form of social (integrative) support.
